So it has come to this. I have now knitted the one item (apart from a knitted bikini) that I never thought I’d knit, ever. Yes, a dishcloth. And not just one but five!

The thing is, I always liked this pattern. And I kept hearing from those who use knitted dishcloths that they work best for all-round kitchen cleaning. Add to that that I’m a hygiene freak, hate store-bought sponge wipes and am always throwing them away after a couple of uses ’cause they stink. Apparently they can be machine washed as well, but I don’t even want them in my washing machine! Which is why I mostly use paper towels. Add to that the fact that as truly machine washable items, knitted cloths not only stay clean but are more ecologically friendly than throw-away stuff. And of course the fact that knitting is fun! And there you go. That’s all it takes to turn from someone who Just Doesn’t Get Knitted Dishcloths to someone who Thinks They’re Great!

Tähän on tultu. Olen nyt neulonut sen yhden ainoan jutun (neulottujen bikinien lisäksi), jota en olisi ikinä uskonut neulovani. Siis koskaan. Kyllä, tiskirätin. Enkä vain yhtä vaan viisi!

Olen aina pitänyt tästä mallista, mutta en vain kuuna päivänä uskonut tekeväni yhtään mitään neulotulla rätillä. Kunnes kuulin useammaltakin puuvillarätin käyttäjältä, että ne toimivat keittiön siivouksesssa parhaiten. Lisätään tähän se, että olen hygieniafriikki ja inhoan tavallisia tiskirättejä, jotka heitän pois melkein saman tien, koska ne haisevat enkä kestä edes nähdä likaisia rättejä. Kuulemma niitäkin voi pestä, mutta en edes halua niitä pesukoneeseeni. Käytänkin siksi lähinnä talouspaperia. Lisätään tähän se, että puuvillaisia neulejuttuja oikeasti voi pestä koneessa, joten ne ovat ekologisempi vaihtoehto kuin kertakäyttöinen talouspaperi. Ja vielä se, että neulominen on hauskaa! Sen enempää ei tarvittu siihen, että Vakaasta Tiskirättien Vihaajasta tuli tiskirättikäännynnäinen.

I didn’t measure the size, but these are quite small, perfect for my hands. Sorry for the boring colours - they just happen to suit our kitchen best. These were really fast to knit - instant gratification!

Life has been getting in the way of knitting and all things fun lately, and I haven’t had much time to knit. Another thing that’s kept me away from blogging is that my current project is a real Mt. Everest of knitting - all cables, plus the sizing issue has come up again. I’m over halfway through now but am still not sure whether all the pieces will fit together after my drastic downsizing efforts, and even then, whether it will fit me. We’ll see.

Yarn has also stopped talking to me (Gasp! Shock! Horror!) and I haven’t bought any for ages. To cure myself from what must be some sort of severe illness, I went ahead and ordered a skein of hand-dyed cashmere sock yarn from Ilu. Yes, 100% cashmere. Soft as ever, and look at the colours!

Elämä ja arki kaikkine kiireineen ja velvollisuuksineen on jättänyt neulomisen ja kaiken muun kivan pahasti jalkoihinsa. Asiaa ei yhtään auta se, että nykyinen projektini on massiivinen palmikkourakka, jossa pienin koko osoittautui taas teltaksi, joten purkuun meni ja uusi yritys muokatuilla silmukkamäärillä. Olen yli puolivälissä, mutta en edelleenkään tiedä, sopivatko osat enää toisiinsa tämän muokkausoperaation jäljiltä - ja ennen kaikkea, sopiiko koko höskä itselleni. Nähtäväksi jää.

Langat ovat myöskin lakanneet puhuttelemasta minua - ei ole ostatuttanut eikä liiemmin neulotuttanutkaan. Jokin sairaushan sen täytyy olla. Parannuskeinoa hain Ilun käsinvärjätystä kashmirsukkalangasta. Kyllä, 100-prosenttista kashmiria ja sukkiin. Unelmanpehmoista ja niin kaunista.

And so, to do something fun and easy and quick while waiting for the big cably thing to knit itself, I whipped up a pair of cashmere socks.

Odotellessani palmikkoprojektin neuloutuvan itsestään ja saadakseni välillä jotain aikaankin pyöräytin nopeat sukat.

Pattern: Hedgerow Socks (pdf)
Yarn: Handu Handdyed 100% cashmere, colourway Pieni nokipoika vaan, 1 skein / 52 g
Needles: 2.5 mm bamboo dpns & 2.5 mm Addi Lace circular
Size: 32 (modified from pattern)

As with the previous socks, I wanted a simple ribbed pattern to accentuate the yarn, although this was more variegated than the Koigu KPM I used last time. I only used the pattern for the rib pattern and modified the rest by resizing these to fit my feet, so I left out nearly half of the stitches and only had 36 stitches instead of 66. I also knitted these toe up and both socks at the same time to maximise the yardage. The yarn seemed to last forever and the socks turned out quite long, but I didn’t want any leftovers.

These are honestly the softest, loveliest socks I’ve ever worn, perfect for sleeping and lounging around, to warm my feet and soften my step. And I think they worked - yarn and I feel slightly closer now. I think we’ll be OK, just give us a little time to talk things through. In fact, I think I might even consider doing some yarn shopping on our holiday.

Halusin edelleen yksinkertaisen ribbimallin korostamaan langan kauniita värejä, vaikka tämä onkin kirjavampaa kuin viimeksi käyttämäni Koigu. Käytin loppujen lopuksi ohjetta vain ribbiin ja muokkasin muuten omasta päästä. Pienensin ohjetta omaan kokooni jättämällä lähes puolet silmukoista pois ja neuloin nämä 36 silmukalla ohjeen 66 sijaan. Toinen muutos oli se, että neuloin nämä kärjestä alkaen ja molemmat sukat yhtä aikaa, jotta sain varmasti kaiken langan käytettyä. Lanka osoittautui riittoisaksi ja jatkui ja jatkui vain, joten sukista tuli loppujen lopuksi melko pitkät.

Nämä ovat ihanimman tuntuiset, pehmeimmät sukat, joita olen koskaan jalassani pitänyt. Täydelliset uni- ja oleskelusukat lämmittämään jalkoja ja pehmentämään askelta. Kaiken lisäksi luulen, että ne auttoivat; lanka ja minä tunnumme lähentyneen toisiamme hieman. Eiköhän tämä tästä. Itse asiassa luulen, että saatan jopa harkita ostavani hieman lankaa kesäreissullamme. Ehkä.

I like my stitch markers simple. I started off with pieces of string tied into a loop. They worked fine until I was knitting a lace stole in a car on our holiday and noticed that the damn loops kept falling off and were pretty hard to locate on the car floor on a highway whilst giving directions to the driver and trying to keep the stitches from falling off the needles. We stopped at a hardware store and I got these (click on the pics for a better view):

Regular jump rings. Perfect, except for the little gap. I thought it wouldn’t matter but it did - the lace yarn was so thin that it occasionally slipped through the gap and the marker changed place. Solution:

Ohuita metallirenkaita, joissa on pieni aukko. En tiedä, mitä nämä ovat suomeksi - jump rings englanniksi. Ne olisivat täydellisiä, ellei niissä olisi sitä aukkoa. Pitsilanka on niin ohutta, että se tulee siitä läpi. Ratkaisu:

Kysyin niitä parista rautakaupasta, ja myyjät eivät oikein tajunneet, mitä tarkoitin. He kyselivät, mihin tarvitsen niitä, mutta “palmikkojen neulominen” tuskin oli se vastaus, jota he hakivat…

Life has been pretty hectic lately and housework has been seriously neglected. Although I like to think of myself as a fairly organised person, my study in particular was starting to resemble a jungle of books, paper, computer stuff, post-it notes, you name it, with various odd balls and hanks of yarn, patterns and general knitting stuff lying all over the place as well. It’s so easy to just close the door and hide the mess when someone comes over… On top of that, we’d never had time to properly organise the book shelf after the move. It covers one entire wall in my study up to the ceiling, and there were piles of books all over the floor as well. Countless were the times when I knocked a pile over when swinging around in my chair, starting a domino effect of falling book piles.

Anyway, one day when I’d been working late, my darling man had tidied up and organised everything in my study, put the books in place and cleared and cleaned both the floor and my desk. The room was miraculously clean, almost shining. I no longer have to wade to my computer on a narrow path between book piles or place my tea cup dangerously close to the keyboard simply because there’s no space for it anywhere else.

But what’s best, although all the surfaces had been cleared of all clutter, he’d left these on an otherwise plain shelf, just because they looked nice. As a design element and source of inspiration. Now, how sweet is that?

Elämä on ollut viime aikoina melkoisen hektistä, ja koti on jäänyt hunningolle. Erityisesti työhuoneeni, jonka oven saa niin kätevästi kiinni, kun tulee vieraita, alkoi muistuttaa kirja-, paperi- ja muistilappuviidakkoa, jossa kaiken lisäksi lojui erinäisiä lankoja, ohjeita ja yleistä neulontasälää siellä täällä. Kaiken lisäksi emme olleet muuton jälkeen edes ehtineet järjestää kirjahyllyä, joka täyttää työhuoneessa kokonaisen seinän lattiasta kattoon. Niinpä myös lattioilla oli kirjapinoja, joita onnistuin useasti kaatamaan, kun pyörähdin tuolissa ympäri turhan vauhdikkaasti. Dominoefektin ansiosta pinoja kaatui yleensä useita.

Joka tapauksessa tässä yhtenä iltana, kun tulin myöhään töistä, rakas mieheni oli siivonnut työhuoneeni ja järjestänyt kaiken paikoilleen. Kirjat olivat siististi paikoillaan hyllyssä, lattia täysin vapaa, työpöytä ja kaikki tasot siistejä, tavarat järjestyksessä ja kaikki pinnat putsattu. Huone oli suorastaan maagisen siisti. Tietokoneelle ei enää tarvitse taiteilla kirjapinojen välissä kulkevaa polkua pitkin, eikä teekuppi ole enää vaarassa kaatua näppikselle.

Parasta on kuitenkin se, että vaikka kaikki pinnat oli siistitty ja tyhjennetty, mies oli jättänyt nämä muuten tylsähkön valkoiselle hyllylle, ihan vain koristeeksi ja inspiraation lähteeksi. Kun ne olivat hänestä niin kauniita ja värikkäitä. Eikö olekin suloista?

Pattern: Firefighters Socks
Yarn: Koigu Premium Merino (KPM), 46 g
Needles: 3 mm rosewood glove dpns
Size: 32

I chose this pattern for the beautiful, nearly solid Koigu I had in my stash because I wanted something simple to bring out the beautiful colour. The name is fitting as the socks really are fire red! I also wanted something not too yarn-consuming since I only had one 50 gram skein, which, by the way, only weighed 46 grams. Which is not much for a pair of socks. These were knitted toe up, and as I knitted both socks at the same time, I managed to use up all the yarn.

I resized the pattern to fit my feet, so I only had 36 stitches on the foot & cuff. I also knitted the rib pattern on the foot as well, not just the ankle. The socks turned out beautiful, very soft and very warm. The yarn was lovely to work with - very JitterBug-like, but thinner. Soft as they were, the socks relaxed even more when I washed them and I don’t know if it’s the yarn or the stretchy pattern, but they could be a little smaller. I like my socks snug, and these are a bit loose. Nevertheless, I’ve been wearing them a lot. The colour is too yummy to resist!

Valitsin tämän ohjeen ihanalle lähes yksiväriselle Koigulleni, sillä halusin yksinkertaisen kuvion, joka toisi värin kauniisti esille. Sattumoisin ohjeen nimi oli osuva, sillä sukkien väri on kuin leimahtava liekki! Halusin myös ohjeen, joka ei syö tolkuttomasti lankaa, sillä minulla oli vain yksi 50 g:n vyyhti, joka sekin osoittautui vain 46 gramman painoiseksi. Se ei ole kovin paljon parille sukkia. Neuloin nämä kärjestä ylöspäin ja molemmat yhtä aikaa, joten sain maksimoitua langankulutuksen.

Pienensin ohjetta jaloilleni sopivaksi niin, että sukissa oli 36 silmukkaa. Toinen muutos oli se, että neuloin ribbiä myös jalkaterän päälle enkä ainoastaan nilkkaan. Sukista tuli ihanat, pehmoiset ja lämpimät. Lanka oli täyttä herkkua - kuin JitterBug, mutta ohuempaa. Vaikka sukat olivat jo pehmeät, ne rentoutuivat pesussa vielä lisää ja ovat sen takia nyt hieman liian löysät. Pidän napakoista sukista, jotka eivät lörpötä mistään kohdasta, ja nämä saisivat olla hieman pienemmät. Olen silti käyttänyt näitä tosi paljon. Ja väri on upea!

Needles: Knit Picks Options Harmony 5 mm
Modifications: Less base triangles, more tiers, shorter fringe
Size: 36 x 200 cm without fringe

This was a lovely piece to knit. I enjoyed watching the colours change, and as the stole was getting bigger, I could wrap it around me and it would keep me warm.

I made some modifications to get the right size. I made this for my mother, who is also on the smaller side, so I didn’t want it to be too wide. Therefore I started with 5 base triangles instead of 7. I also made the stole a bit longer so it wouldn’t slide off her shoulders, and made the fringe quite a bit shorter and with fewer knots.

Tätä oli mukava neuloa. Pidin värien vaihtumisesta, ja kun stoola kasvoi pituutta, käärin sen hartioilleni lämmikkeeksi neuloessa.

Tein muutamia muutoksia saadakseni tästä oikean kokoisen. Tein tämän äidilleni, joka on myöskin pienikokoinen, joten tein 5 aloituskolmiota 7:n sijasta. Neuloin myös lisää pituutta, jotta stoola ei valahtaisi äitini hartioilta, ja tein hapsuista lyhyemmät ja solmin niihin vähemmän solmuja.

I especially like the fringe.

I considered leaving the shawl unblocked because I quite liked the bump effect, but finally decided to block it. On the photo above you can see how it looked before blocking…

The colours were brilliant - beautiful, earthy shades that shifted gradually. I’d read some mixed reviews of the yarn, but to me it was just very soft and nice. I did use smaller needles than recommended, though, to get a tighter finish, and that probably helped with the fuzziness and pilling issues that some people have experienced. As this is a single ply yarn it was a bit splitty and it also had quite a bit of knots, but other than that we got along quite well.

Langassa oli upeat, maanläheiset värit, jotka vaihtuivat kauniisti liukumalla. Olin lukenut langasta ristiriitaisia arvioita, mutta minusta se oli mukavan pehmeää. Käytin suositusta pienempiä puikkoja saadakseni pinnasta tiiviimmän, ja se luultavasti hillitsi pörröisyyttä, jota jotkut ovat kokeneet. Yksisäikeisenä SWS halkeili jonkin verran ja solmujakin oli ihan riittämiin, mutta muuten meillä meni tämän langan kanssa ihan kivasti.

Finally, my first cardigan and the biggest piece of work I’ve done so far! The local knitters know that I worked on this for what seemed like ages. Mostly because I knitted most of it twice. And in fact, I finished it a month ago. It took us ages to get the photos taken because I didn’t quite know how to wear it and even longer for me to get round to blogging it, because… after all that work, the bloody thing is still too big.

Let me start from the beginning. I saw the pattern in the IK preview pics last summer and instantly knew it was for me. I bought the magazine solely for this pattern. Found a yarn that matched the one used in the pattern perfectly and bought 1 kg as instructed, although it seemed a bit much for the smallest size. But no, no alarm went off in my head at this stage.

Cast on, feeling giddy. Didn’t swatch. Who needs swatches when the yarn is a perfect match and the gauge is exactly the same as in the pattern? And if I knit the smallest size, it should be OK, shouldn’t it? Plus the pattern is loose and relaxed, so it doesn’t matter if it’s a bit big. Right?

Finished the back and thought it looked quite big. Never mind, went on to knit the fronts. Blocked each piece, waited for ages for them to dry and attached them with safety pins. Tried the thing on.

And lo; it was a tent. I’m not kidding. It was so big it fell off my shoulders. When I pulled the shoulders to where they should be, the back was sagging at the neck and back like a giant hood and the whole thing hung around me like… a tent. I didn’t even want to take any pictures of it; it was too depressing. There was no way around it. I had to frog everything.

So I frogged, skeined, soaked, straightened, dried and wound the yarns and started all over. I had to rework the pattern to make it 1-2 sizes smaller than the smallest size. I took about 10 cm off the length and at least the same off the sides, or more, and knitted the sleeves even smaller than that and a lot shorter.

Vihdoinkin, ensimmäinen villatakkini ja isoin neulomukseni tähän asti! Paikalliset neulojat voivat todistaa, että tämän neulomiseen meni pieni ikuisuus. Eikä vähiten siksi, että neuloin suurimman osan siitä kahteen kertaan. Sain tämän valmiiksikin jo kuukausi sitten, mutta emme saaneet aikaiseksi kuvata tätä, koska en oikein tiennyt, miten tämän saisi edustavasti puettua päälle. Bloggaamiseen meni sitten vieläkin kauemmin, sillä kaiken tämän työn jälkeen tuo pirun tekele on vieläkin liian iso.

Aloitetaan alusta. Näin tämän mallin syksyn IK:n mallikuvien ennakkokatselussa viime kesänä ja ihastuin siihen heti. Ostin lehden heti, kun se ilmestyi, ja ainoastaan tämän mallin takia. Löysin langan, joka täsmäsi ohjeen lankaan täydellisesti, ja ostin sitä kuuliaisesti kilon, vaikka se tuntui aika paljolta. Hälytyskellot eivät tässä vaiheessa soineet päässä ollenkaan.

Rupesin tyytyväisenä neulomaan. Ai mikä mallitilkku? Kuka tarvitsee mallitilkkua, kun lanka mätsää täydellisesti ja tiheyskin on täsmälleen oikea? Minähän teen tuon pienimmän koon, niin eikö sen pitäisi sopia? Ja kun tuo mallikin on tuollainen rento ja väljä, niin eihän se nyt haittaa, vaikka se olisi vähän reilun kokoinen. Vai mitä?

Neuloin takakappaleen. Se näytti aika isolta. Mutta ei siinä mitään, jatketaan samaan malliin. Neuloin etukappaleet, pingotin kaiken, odottelin kuivumista iät ja ajat ja kiinnitin hakaneuloilla yhteen. Menin peilin eteen ja vedin päälle.

Peilissä näkyi hetken aikaa teltta ja sen keskellä pieni pää, kunnes teltta putosi hartioilta. Oikeasti. Kun vedin sen hartioilta kohdalleen, niskaan ilmestyi huppu, joka lörpötti selkään asti, ja koko komeus leijui ympärilläni kuin… teltta. Otti kohtuullisen paljon päähän. Ei huvittanut edes ottaa kuvia todisteeksi.

Purkuun siis, langat vyyhdille, liotukseen, suoristukseen, kuivumaan ja uudelleen kerälle. Laskin ja viivoitin käteen, ohje uusiksi ja uusi aloitus. Pituudesta lähti 10 cm ja sivuista ainakin saman verran. Hihoja kavensin vielä enemmän ja lyhensin samoin.

Perhaps if I wrap it around me real tight, it won’t look that bad…

Ehkä jos kiedon sen ympärilleni näin, niin ehkei se sitten näytä niin isolta…

I knitted the collar and the cuffs as in the pattern, and those are precisely the things that bother me most. The collar is OK if I hold on to it, but if I let go, the cardigan barely stays on my shoulders. And the cuffs are… looong.

Neuloin kauluksen ja hihansuut ohjeen mukaan, ja juuri ne tässä eniten vaivaavat. Kaulus on ihan okei, jos siitä pitää kiinni, mutta kun päästää irti, takki valahtaa olkapäille. En ole sieltä skrodeimmasta päästä, eivätkä hartiani näemmä jaksa kantaa noin painavaa takkia. Ja nuo hihansuut nyt vain ovat suhteessa tosi pitkät.

Nevertheless, I like the cables and the design in general. I love the style and the yarn is beautiful. This would be my favourite cardigan if the size was right! It’s been finished for a month now and I haven’t worn it once; either I’ll have to redo some of it or give it to someone. I also liked knitting this and wouldn’t mind making another one - but with thinner yarn. The pattern cannot be modified any more without messing up the design.

Kaikesta huolimatta pidän tuosta kuviosta ja koko mallista. Se on aivan minun tyyliseni, ja värikin on täydellinen. Tämä olisi lempivillatakkini, jos se olisi sopiva! Se on nyt ollut valmiina kuukauden, enkä ole käyttänyt sitä kertaakaan, koska se tuntuu isolta ja tuntuu valahtavan vähän väliä niin, että sitä saa koko ajan nykiä paikalleen. Joko jotain täytyy taas purkaa ja pienentää tai sitten täytyy antaa se pois. Tämän neulominenkin oli ihan mukavaa - mallineule tuli tosiaan tutuksi! - ja saattaisin jopa tehdä joskus toisenkin, tosin ohuemmasta langasta sitten. Mallia ei voi enää kaventaa enempää rusikoimatta mallineuletta.

By the way, it’s now been about one year since I started knitting. I learned on the Internet, and the net is still an essential part of my knitting. It’s been a fun year - and who knew I’d still be knitting now, one year later? Knitting has brought me new friends, I’ve learned new things, discovered a whole new world with knitting blogs and Ravelry and developed a passion for yarns. While I normally tend to get excited about new things and then abandon them in 3 months, not once have I grown bored with knitting. It’s part of my daily life now, something that relaxes me when I’m stressed and something I miss when I’m busy. I never watch tv without knitting these days - what a waste of good knitting time that would be! And yarn and needles are something I definitely, definitely pack with me every time I travel!

Nyt on muuten kulunut suurin piirtein vuosi siitä, kun aloitin neulomisen. Opettelin netistä löytyvien ohjeiden avulla, ja netti on yhä oleellinen osa tätä harrastusta. Kuka olisi arvannut, että neulon vielä vuoden päästä? Tämä on ollut hauska vuosi. Olen saanut uusia ystäviä, oppinut uusia asioita, löytänyt neuleblogien ja Ravelryn avulla aivan uuden maailman ja tietysti kehittänyt melkoisen fiksaation noihin kalliimmanpuoleisiin lankoihin, uhh. Olen sitä tyyppiä, joka innostuu uusista asioista helposti mutta kyllästyy muutamassa kuukaudessa, mutta neulomiseen en ole kyllästynyt vuoden aikana vielä kertaakaan. Päinvastoin, siitä on tullut osa päivittäistä elämääni. Se rentouttaa, kun olen väsynyt, ja kaipaan sitä, kun olen kiireinen. En enää katso tv:tä neulomatta - kuka jättäisi noin hyvää neulomisaikaa käyttämättä? Ja lanka ja puikot kulkevat ehdottomasti mukanani matkoilla!

Many Finnish knitters are currently participating in a national yarn buying strike and stash reduction group effort, traditionally arranged each February. And the “lose 10% of both your stash and body weight” campaign only finished less than two months ago!

Am I in these campaigns? Eh, no. Me, I love yarn. And I looove buying yarn. Yarn is happiness! Stash is good! Granted, I may not have a huge stash yet, but trust me, I’m getting there. And so, let me introduce the latest arrivals to the flock:

This, on the other hand, is something new. It’s Dream In Color Smooshy, 100% superfine Australian merino wool. The colours were so fabulous that I had a hard time deciding which one I liked best, so I took the three ones I liked best. Make sense? I’m glad I did, because the colours differ quite a lot from the pics on the manufacturer’s website. From the top: Chocolate Kiss, Gothic Rose and In Vino Veritas. I’m keeping the Gothic Rose one and have already bought more of it, enough for a sweater. This is sock yarn, but the skeins are huge and the yardage is really good: 450 yards per 100 grams. I’ve already sold the bottom one. Chocolate Kiss is still up for grabs. Any takers? Feel free to contact me on my e-mail or by leaving a comment.

Tämä sen sijaan oli uusi tuttavuus. Lanka on Dream In Colorin Smooshyä, 100-prosenttista australialaista merinovillaa. Värit olivat niin upeita, etten osannut päättää, mistä pidin eniten. Niinpä tilasin kolmea parasta väriä! Värit ovat itse asiassa luonnossa aika erilaisia kuin valmistajan nettisivun kuvissa, joten kokeilu kannatti, varsinkin kun ylimääräiset voi aina myydä. Värit ovat ylhäältä lukien Chocolate Kiss, Gothic Rose ja In Vino Veritas. Pidin eniten Gothic Rosesta, joten ostin sitä jo lisää villapaidallisen verran. Lanka on sukkalankaa, mutta vyyhdit ovat todella muhkeita ja metrejäkin on 100 grammassa noin 415. In Vino Veritas löysi jo uuden kodin, mutta Chocolate Kiss on yhä vapaana. These I got mainly because they’re cashmere and… they were a bargain! The black ones are 100% cashmere (colourway 622) and the pale pink one is 50% cashmere and 50% silk (colourway 502). They’re both lace weight and let me just say… they’re incredibly, incredibly soft. Once I picked them up from the parcel it was hard to put them down! From Yubina.

Nämä ostin lähinnä siksi, että ne olivat kashmiria… eivätkä maksaneet paljon mitään! Mustat ovat 100-prosenttista kashmiria (väri 622), ja hennon vaaleanpunaisessa on puolet kashmiria ja puolet silkkiä (väri 502). Molemmat ovat pitsilankaa ja aivan käsittämättömän pehmeitä. Oikeasti niin pehmeitä, että kun ne kerran poimi paketista, niitä ei olisi millään malttanut laskea käsistään! Yubinasta.

A couple of years ago I got addicted to running, having hated it all my life. How did that happen? I bought myself a good pair of running shoes, gave it a try and realised how effective it is. I used to run with my heart rate monitor and iPod, but recently we both bought iPod Nanos. I got mine mostly for running, since the huge old iPod was quite heavy. Our new iPod Nanos are sleek, super light and red. And what’s best, we got ourselves some new running gadgets - Nike + iPod!

Innostuin pari vuotta sitten kokeilemaan lenkkeilyä. Olin aina inhonnut juoksemista, mutta yllättäen jäinkin nopeasti koukkuun. Miten siinä näin pääsi käymään? Ostin kunnon lenkkarit, kävin koelenkillä ja huomasin, miten tehokasta juokseminen on. Juoksin ennen sykemittarin ja iPodin kanssa, mutta ostimme hiljattain molemmat iPod Nanot. Minä ostin omani lähinnä juoksemista varten, sillä vanha iPod oli siihen melko painava, mutta pidän siitä muuten edelleen, sillä siihen mahtuu paljon enemmän musiikkia kuin 8 gigan Nanoon. Nano taas on kapea, kevyt ja punainen ja siksi houkutteleva! Ja mikä parasta, nyt pystyimme hankkimaan myös Nike + iPod -setin, joka sopii vain Nanoon.

The kit includes a sensor that goes in the shoe and communicates with the Nano, and later the computer, about the running statistics: distance, speed, calories burnt, etc. The only problem was that the sensor is only compatible with Nike shoes that have a little compartment for it, and no way was I going to give up my trusty Asics, nor did I feel like carving a hole in them. But lo, inventive runners have come up with several ways of using the sensor in non-Nike shoes. These include all kinds of devices that allow the sensor to be attached to the laces. What would a knitter do? Knit a pouch for the sensor!

Settiin kuuluu sensori, joka on yhteydessä Nanoon ja myöhemmin tietokoneeseen ja tallentaa lenkin tilastot: matkan, nopeuden, kulutetut kalorit jne. Ainoa ongelma oli se, että sensori sopii vain Niken lenkkareihin, joissa on sitä varten sopiva kolo. Ja minähän en suostunut Asicseistani luopumaan, saati kaivertamaan niihin kuoppaa. Onneksi kekseliäät juoksijat ovat keksineet yhtä jos toistakin tapaa kiinnittää lähetin lenkkarin nauhoihin. Mitäpä tekee neuloja? Tietenkin neuloo lähettimelle kotelon!

Essentially, it’s just like the toe of a sock that’s closed up at both ends. The sensor really is very small. Just compare the finished products with a mouse:

Pattern: Nike + iPod Shoe Hack
Yarn: Garnstudio Muskat, black (his) and silver (mine), about 1 g each
Needles: 3.5 mm bamboo dpns

The pouch is nearly invisible on the black shoe. But as you probably guessed, these are not my man’s running shoes; he likes to wear regular gym shoes when running at the gym. So I’ll be making a new pouch for him when the outdoor running season starts in the spring, to match his Asics running shoes. Luckily, this was a fun little project and it only took me about 20 minutes to knit each pouch. My thanks to Zeska for lending me her scrap yarns!

Sensori ei pahemmin näy varsinkaan mustasta lenkkarista. Tosin, kuten varmaan huomasittekin, nämä eivät ole mieheni juoksulenkkarit; hän käyttää salilla juostessaan mieluummin tavallisia lenkkareita. I’ve recently completed my first made-to-order project! Not for a paying customer but my mother, who bought the yarn and asked me to knit a scarf for her. I got to choose the design. I knew My So Called Scarf looks good in variegated yarn, so I cast on just to see how it looks in yarn where the colour changes gradually. The more I knitted, the more I liked it, so I decided to stick to the pattern.

Tein viime viikolla ensimmäisen tilaustyöni. En tosin maksavalle asiakkaalle vaan äidilleni, joka osti langat ja pyysi niistä huivia. Mallin sain valita itse. Ajattelin ensin vain kokeilla, miltä My So Called Scarf näyttäisi liukuvärjätyssä langassa. Mitä pidemmälle neuloin, sitä paremmalta se näytti, joten jatkoin samalla mallilla.

Pattern: My So Called Scarf
Yarn: Pirtin Kehräämön hahtuvalanka, 100% wool, shade 728, 252 g
Needles: Knit Picks Options Harmony 6 mm
Finished size: 17 x 168 cm

I cast on 28 stitches, used two skeins of yarn and got just the right size. It’s rather wide for a “wind around your neck and tie up” kind of scarf, but we both like our scarves wide enough to allow us to pull them up to protect our faces from the harsh winter wind.

Loin 28 silmukkaa ja käytin kaksi vyyhtiä lankaa, ja huivista tuli juuri sopivan kokoinen. Se on melko leveä kaulan ympäri kieputettavaksi huiviksi, mutta pidämme molemmat siitä, että huivin saa nostettua myös kasvojen suojaksi viimaa vastaan.

The yarn itself was quite interesting. It’s bulky Finnish wool, four strands of unspun loosely plied together. There’s no twist at all but it’s still clearly yarn, not unspun, and it’s very strong. The finished scarf is softer than it may look and surprisingly stretchy.

Lanka oli aika mielenkiintoista. Se on paksua ja tehty hahtuvasta. Siinä ei ole yhtään kierrettä, mutta se on silti selvästi lankaa eikä hahtuvaa. Se tuntui myös vahvalta ja kesti hyvin neulomista. Huivista tuli pehmeähkö eikä lainkaan niin peltinen kuin kuvasta saattaisi päätellä. Se on myös yllättävän joustava.

And I still like this pattern.
