This yarn was one of the yummiest I’ve ever knitted, and the colour is sheer perfection. The pattern was nice, too: easy enough to memorise, sharp enough to keep you on your toes. I loved knitting it, and I love the end result even more.

Tämä lanka oli silkkaa herkkua, ja väri on suorastaan täydellinen. Ohjekin oli mainio: riittävän helppo mieleen painettavaksi mutta juuri sen verran liian helppo, että välillä piti keskittyäkin. Neulominen oli ihanaa, mutta ihana on lopputuloskin!

Here’s a close-up of the pattern. The colour is actually more plum than purple. Perfect!

A couple of weeks ago Niina and I took a dive in the Big Apple. I love big cities, and we had a good time shopping and strolling around. Surprisingly, we didn’t buy that much yarn, although we managed to visit four yarn stores: Seaport Yarn, Purl, Knitty City and String, which we actually stumbled upon by accident. My stash was enhanced by the following beauties:

Sukelsimme muutama viikko sitten Niinan kanssa New Yorkin humuun. Kivaa oli shoppaillessa ja kuljeskellessa. Yllättäen emme kuitenkaan ostaneet kovin paljon lankaa, vaikka kävimme neljässä lankakaupassa: Seaport Yarnissa, Purlissa, Knitty Cityssä ja Stringissä, johon itse asiassa törmäsimme sattumalta. Oma lankavarastoni kasvoi seuraavilla kaunokaisilla:

Manos del Uruguay Wool Clásica, 100% kettle dyed pure wool, colourway 43. The colour didn’t come out very well in the picture – it’s actually a rather bright turquoise blue. Lovely! I bought it with my SO in mind since he likes this colour.

Manos del Uruguay Wool Clásica, 100 % villaa, väri 43. Väri on oikeasti voimakkaampi ja kirkkaampi turkoosi kuin kuvassa, todella kaunis. Ostin tämän miestä varten, kun hän pitää tästä väristä.

Mountain Colors Mountain Goat, Blue Green. I got the Manos first and then found this one – and the colour was even brighter and better than that of the Manos… Sorry Manos! I just couldn’t resist this colour, it was fabulous. This yarn is 55% mohair and 45% wool, but it feels surprisingly non-mohairy. No halo, no hairs sticking out, no tickly effect. It’s completely smooth and soft.

Mountain Colors Mountain Goat, Blue Green. Ostin ensin Manosin ja myöhemmin törmäsin sitten tähän… enkä voinut vastustaa. Tämä oli vielä syvemmän, kirkkaamman ja upeamman sininen kuin Manos. Oli siis otettava tämäkin! Tässä on 55 % mohairia ja 45 % villaa, mutta tuntuma on yllättävän ei-mohairinen. Ei minkäänlaista pörröisyyttä eikä kutinaa, vain täydellistä sileyttä ja pehmeyttä. Ja täydellinen sininen väri.

Finally, three skeins of Hand Maiden Sea Silk (70% silk, 30% sea cell) in three different colourways. I already had some of this in my stash, waiting for the Perfect Project (one should never buy yarn that’s too fancy!), but I couldn’t resist these colours. I also couldn’t decide which one I liked best so I grabbed all three. How smart is that, considering that I may never find four Perfect Projects?

The labels don’t have the names of the colourways (why, oh why?), so I’m only guessing that the colours are, from top to bottom, Earth, Burgundy and Amethyst. But they could just as well be something else.

Lopuksi ostin kolme vyyhtiä Hand Maidenin Sea Silkiä (70 % silkkiä, 30 % sea celliä). Minulla oli tätä jo ennestään varastossa loikoilemassa, odottamassa Täydellistä Projektia. Koskaan ei pitäisi ostaa liian ihanaa lankaa! Tämä mielessäni menin sitten ja ostin sitä kolme vyyhtiä lisää, vain siksi, että en osannut päättää, mistä väristä pidin eniten. Otin siis kaikki. Tämä ei tietysti ollut järin fiksua, sillä nyt minun täytyy löytää yhden sijaan neljä Täydellistä Projektia… Mutta kun nuo värit olivat niin kauniita. Ja se kiilto!

Langoissa ei lue värien nimiä (grrr…), joten voin vain arvata, että ne ovat ylhäältä lukien Earth, Burgundy ja Amethyst. Mutta saattavat olla jotain muutakin.

We also got some square needles. The thought sounds quite odd, but apparently they’re easier on your hands since you don’t have to grab them that hard, and the stitches are supposed to be smoother and more even. I’m a very relaxed knitter so I wouldn’t know about the grabbing thing, but we got to try them out on a piece of swatch knitted by several knitters, and I have to say the swatch was very even. It looked like it had been knitted by one person only. But I guess we got these more out of curiosity. The needles are metal but nickel-free, and the cables are super flexible. Even better than the Knit Picks ones!

Ostimme myös neliskulmaisia puikkoja. Ne kuulostavat oudoilta, mutta ilmeisesti ne säästävät käsiä, sillä niitä ei tarvitse puristaa, ja jäljestä pitäisi tulla tasaisempaa. Olen itse sen verran rento neuloja, että en puristele puikkojani muutenkaan, mutta kokeilimme näitä kaupassa mallitilkkuun, jota oli meidän lisäksemme neulonut useampikin kokeilija, ja täytyy sanoa, että jälki oli hyvin tasaista. Ostimme nämä kuitenkin lähinnä uteliaisuudesta. Puikot ovat metallia, mutta niissä ei ole nikkeliä, ja kaapelit ovat superjoustavat. Oikeasti, ne ovat paremmat kuin Knit Picksit! Ja se on jo aika paljon se.

Aside from yarn stores, we spent quite a bit of time browsing knitting books at Kinokuniya. (And of course they had all kinds of pretty Japanese things as well – the paper department was like a little piece of Japan in Manhattan. I loved it!) I got what I hope to be The Mother of All Japanese Knitting Pattern Books…

Vietimme myös hyvän tovin Kinokuniyan neulekirjojen äärellä. (Ja olihan siellä kaikkea muutakin pientä kivaa – paperiosasto oli kuin pieni pala Japania keskellä Manhattania. Ihanaa!) Ostin toivon mukaan Kaikkien Japanilaisten Mallineulekirjojen Äidin…

Funnily enough, we made one of the best findings at JFK, which is not exactly known for its great shopping, just as we were looking for a place to spend our last cash in.

Yksi reissun parhaista löydöistä tuli vastaan yllättäen JFK:ssa, jossa ei noin yleisesti ottaen ole järin kummoiset ostosvalikoimat, juuri kun pähkäilimme, mihin saisimme kulutettua viimeiset käteiset.

A cashmere comb! I have an electric lint shaver as well, and while they’re probably better since they cut the fibres instead of pulling at them (and therefore possibly creating even more fuzzing and pilling), this just has some of that old world charm. And it doesn’t make that horrible noise!

Kashmirkampa! Minulla on toki myös patterikäyttöinen nukkaleikkuri, ja vaikka leikkurimallit todennäköisesti ovat parempia, koska ne leikkaavat nukan pois eivätkä kisko sitä irti (ja samalla mahdollisesti aiheuta uutta nukkaa), niin tässä vain oli jotain ihanaa vanhan ajan charmia. Eikä se surise!

I’ve been interested in trying out hemp yarn for a while, and TitiTyy was kind enough to donate two skeins of Lanaknits Allhemp6 DK (100% hemp) for testing and review purposes. The colours are Raspberry (011) and Chocolate (028), and you guessed it – what else would I make out of them but dishcloths. Not to worry – we now have more than enough dishcloths, so this is not turning into a dishcloth blog!

Olen jo jonkin aikaa ollut kiinnostunut hamppulangasta, ja kun TitiTyy lahjoitti ystävällisesti pari vyyhtiä Lanaknits Allhemp6 DK:ta testattavaksi uusimman Ullan ekolankajuttuun, oli aika kokeilla. Värit ovat Raspberry (011) ja Chocolate (028), ja lanka on 100-prosenttista hamppua. Mitäpä sitä muutakaan niistä tekemään kuin tiskirättejä! Ei silti hätää – meillä on nyt rättejä niin, että riittää vähäksi aikaa, joten ei tästä tiskirättiblogia ole tulossa.

Oikealla ylhäällä Ballband Dishcloth, vasemmalla Vadelma-keittiöliina (PDF) ja oikeassa alakulmassa helmineulerätti. Käytin 3,5 mm:n puikkoja (helmineulerätissä 3,75 mm), ja räteillä on painoa 35 – 54 g.

I even experimented and wrote a pattern of my own, if you can call it that, since there really is nothing new there. It was published in Ulla with the yarn review, and here’s the English translation (or rather the original, since I wrote this in English):

Pattern: Pineapple Dishcloth
Yarn: Lanaknits Allhemp6 DK, 028, 34 g
Needles: Knit Picks Options Harmony 3.5 mm
Size: About 20 x 20 cm

CO 41.

Rows 1, 3 & 5: Purl

Rows 2 & 4: Knit

Row 6: Knit

Row 7: P4, PM, k1, *p3tog but do not let the stitches fall from the left needle, wrap yarn around the right needle and bring back to front, p the same 3 stitches again and let fall from the left needle, k1. Repeat from * until 4 s remain, PM, p4.

Row 8: Knit

Row 9: P4, k1, p1, k1, *p3tog but do not let the stitches fall from the left needle, wrap yarn around the right needle and bring back to front, p the same 3 stitches again and let fall from the left needle, k1. Repeat from * until 6 s remain, p1, k1, p4.

Repeat rows 6-9 until you reach the desired length. Finish with 5 rows of stocking stitch. Bind off, weave in ends.

The stocking stitch edges have a natural tendency to curl, but I chose it rather than seed stitch because it looked better with the pattern. If the curled edges bother you, you can block the cloth.

Allhemp6 DK takes more than a couple of washes before it starts to soften up, which makes it more challenging as dishcloth yarn than cotton. It was quite stiff to knit, and as a loose knitter I had to go down in needle size although I tried to knit more tightly. The manufacturer recommends soaking the yarn in hair conditioner before knitting; I tried that with one of the skeins, but it didn’t make much difference. The colours bleed a little in each wash, but the yarn seems really strong and durable and gets better with each wash. Allhemp6 DK dishcloths can be machine washed in hot water.
